Another blackout has hit three states in Southeast Mexico in the past week. The region is connected to the SEN by just one transmission line, threatening the energy system in the event of a failure. Coincidentally, CFE announced an investment of MX$2 billion to strengthen the network, even though two important transmission line auctions have been canceled. The company will also purchase 4 million tons of coal from Glencore to power the country’s biggest coal facility.

Internationally, the world’s largest sovereign fund will invest billions of US dollars in renewables, potential energy buyers and sellers could soon be meeting through an online marketplace and AWS announced the purchase of three renewables projects to set the company on the path to 100 percent clean energy generation. IEA’s 2018 Global Energy & CO2 Status Report is now available and highlights that given high emissions levels, the next generation will have to scale back its carbon footprint.
